The Anti-Masonic movement (c. 1826–1840s) was the first3rd-party in U.S. history, emerging in New York to oppose Freemasonry after the 1826 disappearance of William Morgan.
Driven by populism, members believed the secret society was a corrupt, elite, anti-republican, and un-Christian, controlling the government. The movement introduced the first presidential nominating convention in 1831.
